Hound Group-while most of these breeds are short-haired it is still important to have them bathed or groomed. For short-haired grooming consists of cutting & filing nails and a curry brush used to deshed the loose hair. For the few longer-haired or wire-coat breeds, carding or clippers are used to set and keep a pattern.

bathing should be once a week to every 12 weeks minimum.

grooming should be every 4-6 weeks

All dogs living in a home enviornment obviously have different needs than the show dogs that are being constantly groomed.  Each pet should be groomed at least every 8 weeks to prevent matting, fleas or tick infestation, poor skin, ear infections, etc. 

Also, wether purebred or mixed breeds, all dogs need grooming salon experience to avoid fear and apprehension that comes from minimal visits. 

What happens if dogs are only brought in for grooming once the coat has become unmanageable to the pet owner, who usually will request a brushout rather than a shave, is that the dogs become mean and hard to handle because of the pain involved in that service.  Most groomers will do their best to request that the pet is shaved.  It is the humane choice for the dog.
