Often times when choosing a puppy we don't always seem to consider the type of breed we are purchasing or what their long term needs may be relative to grooming and or bathing. Anyone who has a pet comes to realize that grooming is for health as well as beauty.
As groomers we become familiar with many skin and coat issues usually related to dog food additives. And, as a 30 year veteran groomer I can tell you those large cysts and tumors on dogs were never around back in the old days because those food additives were not present in the foods. We know when new tumors are present and we tell the client if they have not realized.
We see lots of matting because dogs or cats are not always maintained in between their grooming appts.
This is where some of the extra expense starts to the client and the matting is painful to the dog or cat because of the tight pull that it creates to the skin, not to mention the skin problems, mold, and or yeast that gets underneathe the affected area.
Dental issues seem to be the biggest problem that we see. Many dogs teeth are rotting our of their mouths because they do not get brushed or they do not get the costly dental treatments available. Sometimes we cannot even hold the animals face for trimming because of the amount of pain that it is experiencing.
At our salon we sell many dental products from toothbrushes to natural liver flavored toothpastes for dogs and cats. As well as probiotics for the mouth to kill bacteria, and water additives for the pet who refuses to let you in their mouth.
